The geometric and temporal evolution of fault?related folds constrain normal fault growth patterns, Barents Sea, offshore Norway

چکیده
Extensional growth folds form ahead of the tips propagating normal faults. These can accommodate a considerable amount extensional strain and they may control rift geometry. Fold-related surface deformation also sedimentary evolution syn-rift depositional systems. Thus, by examining stratigraphic record, we constrain four-dimensional folds, which in turn provides record fault broader history. Here, use high-quality 3D seismic reflection borehole data from SW Barents Sea, offshore northern Norway to determine geometric temporal associated with large, long-lived, basement-rooted fault. We show that grew via linkage four segments, was formation fault-parallel fault-perpendicular accommodated substantial portion (10%–40%) total strain. Several periods fault-propagation folding occurred response periodic burial fault, individual events (ca. 25 32 Myr) lasting considered part ca. 130 Myr period. Our study supports previous suggestions continuous (i.e. folding) as well discontinuous faulting) must be explicitly when assessing an setting. changes architecture strata alternating faulting margins rift-related depocentres characterised basinward-dipping monoclines opposed fault-bound scarps. findings have implications for our understanding structural, physiographic tectonostratigraphic basins.

Relating temporal and spatial patterns of DMSP in the Barents Sea to phytoplankton biomass and productivity
Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), produced by many marine phytoplankton, is the main precursor of the climate relevant gas dimethylsulfide (DMS). Currently, it is generally accepted that the relationship between DMSP and phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll a), while not representative of the absolute magnitude of the DMSP pool, is a good indicator of ecosystem structure. In this study we tes...

The Barents Sea system is often depicted as a simple food web in terms of number of dominant feeding links. The most conspicuous feeding link is between the Northeast Arctic cod Gadus morhua, the world's largest cod stock which is presently at a historical high level, and capelin Mallotus villosus. The system also holds diverse seabird and marine mammal communities. Previous diet studies may su...

Fisheries in the North Atlantic, southeast Atlantic, and eastern central Atlantic reached their maximum production levels one or two decades ago and are now showing a declining trend in total catches (1). The declining catches are consistent with observations that these areas have the highest incidence of overexploited stocks, depleted stocks or slowly recovering stocks that have been depleted ...
